Design
The PX7 headphones are available in gray or silver models, with a fabric-lined headband, earcups with a stylishly mottled plastic, and smooth leather on the earpads and underside of the headband for a luxurious look and feel. The earpads and headband are amply cushioned with memory foam. The cups swivel on hinges for a secure, relatively tight fit, but thanks to the padding, the pressure never veers into uncomfortable territory. Internally, 43.6mm drivers deliver a frequency range of 10Hz to 30kHz—the drivers are recessed and the earcups are labeled left and right on the interior cloth grilles.
The right earcup's side panel houses a power/pairing switch, as well as a three-button array. The central multifunction button controls playback, track navigation, call management, and voice assistants (when held), and the outer two buttons are dedicated volume up and down. There's a USB-C port near the buttons for the included charging cable, and a 3.5mm jack for the included audio cable.
The PX7's audio cable has no inline remote control, and the headphones cannot be used in passive mode. The control panel is disabled when the cable is connected, so you lose any ability to control music or take calls other than on your connected device. You can still switch between the different ANC modes when using the cable, including turning the ANC off.
The Bowers & Wilkins app (for Android and iOS) has an ANC section that allows you to adjust the level of ambient pass-through from the mics, from none to quite a bit. It also has some ambient soundscapes you can listen to for relaxation or focus (or simply because you like the sound of rain or waterfalls), and the app also installs software updates when they're available.
It can disable the sensor that automatically pauses or plays music when you take the headphones off or put them back on—a feature that can be jarring if the headphones have been off for long enough. You can also disable voice prompts and customize the standby timer for the headphones to power down (or simply disable it). The lack of user-adjustable EQ seems like an oversight for headphones this expensive, however. For audio playback, they use Bluetooth 5.0 and support both AptX (HD, Adaptive, and Classic) and AAC codecs.
Bowers & Wilkins estimates battery life to be roughly 30 hours, but your results will vary with your mix of ANC use and your volume levels.
Performance
There are various ANC modes including high, low, auto, and off. While the circuitry does a good job of tamping down most surrounding noise, the modes themselves don't seem to offer much advantage, and when we were in a relatively quiet room with auto mode selected, the headphones abruptly switched to what sounded like off without being touched. The good news is the high and low modes work well, with high mode eliminating a lot of surrounding chatter, fan whir, and some keyboard typing clicks. It does a better job with low-frequency rumble, like train and plane noise. There's also very little added hiss, which is a common side effect of ANC.

The ANC has little or no effect on the audio performance, which is good news. Some lesser ANC circuitry will drastically alter the sound signature, and even some top-notch ANC can tend to mess with the bass depth slightly, but there's little obvious difference between the various modes here.

As mentioned, the app provides the ability to mix in ambient surrounding audio with your chosen ANC mode, so you can blend the room around you to your preference. Obviously, this is most useful for conversations, or being able to hear someone or something nearby while still blocking out much of the surrounding sound. Pressing and holding the ANC button on the left earcup activates or deactivates this mode manually.
For audio, on tracks with intense sub-bass content, like The Knife's 'Silent Shout,' the headphones deliver excellent low-frequency response—there's plenty of thump, but it's well-defined, and the highs are nicely represented. There's no distortion on this track at top volumes.
Bill Callahan's 'Drover,' a track with far less deep bass in the mix, gives us a better sense of the PX7's general sound signature. The drums here get a solid helping of low and low-mid heft, but they avoid sounding overly thunderous. Callahan's baritone vocals get a healthy dose of low-mid richness as well, and if anything's missing, we'd like to hear a touch more high-mid presence, but that's nitpicking.
On Jay-Z and Kanye West's 'No Church in the Wild,' the kick drum loop receives enough high-mid presence for its attack to maintain its punchiness, but it's the highs that seem most boosted and sculpted—the vinyl hiss and crackle on this track takes a big step forward. The sub-bass synth hits that punctuate the beat are delivered with gusto, but again, they don't overpower the mix.
We can also report that when a track has more subtle sub-bass in the mix, the headphones step up and deliver. 'Psithurism' from Massimo Pupillo and Tony Buck possesses some serious sub-rumble, though it isn't mixed in at a super-high level, and the headphones dutifully, subtly convey this.
On orchestral tracks, like the opening scene from John Adams' The Gospel According to the Other Mary, the sculpting can sound a bit off—the high-mids get a little less spotlight than we might wish for, and the highs feel sculpted in a way that can produce moments that sound hollow or pinched. That said, the lower-register instrumentation has a lovely anchoring presence, and we are once again being picky—most listeners will enjoy the balance, richness, and high-frequency detail here. For $400, however, it's a bummer the app doesn't allow you to tweak the sound signature to taste with EQ.
The mic offers average intelligibility. Using the Voice Memos app on an iPhone 8, we could understand every word we recorded, but the background whir of a fan was quite noticeable, the audio sounded slightly distorted and thin, and the mic signal was a tad low. Callers should still be able to understand you on a good connection, but we've heard better clarity from other wireless headphones.

If it's best-in-class ANC you're after, stick with the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700. If you want the best audio experience, the Bowers & Wilkins PX7 and the $350 Sennheiser PXC 550-II are both strong contenders for your money—the differences will come down to taste, but Sennheiser may have the edge in that battle thanks to an app with EQ to tweak the sonics. And for less money, the in-ear $250 Apple AirPods Pro deliver surprisingly strong ANC and solid audio performance. It's also worth mentioning B&W offers the $300 PX5 headphones, which are also quite good, and worth your attention depending on your budget.
